Today (Tuesday 28 February), a government-backed review led by Baroness McGregor-Smith has found that the UK could benefit from a £24bn-a-year boost if Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) employees progressed at the same rate as their white counterparts. One of the 26 recommendations cited in the review is the call to action for all employers to participate in an annual list of the Best 100 Employers for Race. Business in the Community is delighted to be taking this recommendation forward via a pilot initiative this year, integrated with the Business in the Community Race Equality Awards 2017.
Responding to the report, Sandra Kerr OBE, Business in the Community Race Equality Director, said: “We welcome this review as it clearly shows that harnessing the very best of BAME talent is the way forward that makes sense for employers. I wholeheartedly believe that every person, regardless of their ethnicity or background should be able to fulfil their potential at work. That is the business as well as the moral case. We know that diverse organisations that attract and develop individuals from the widest pool of talent consistently perform better - but this change has to be employer-led. The time for talking is over; now is the time to act.
“We also welcome the recommendation that Business in the Community establishes a listing of employers that are taking a comprehensive and strategic approach to tackling racial inequalities in their organisations. Our annual list of ‘Best 100 Employers for Race’ will enable us to celebrate employers from all sectors who, through strong leadership, are demonstrating their commitment to the recruitment, progression and inclusion of BAME people in the workplace. By identifying the 100 best employers in the UK for race diversity and equality, we will showcase businesses at their best and spur other employers on to improve diversity and inclusion in their organisations.”
Other recommendations from the review include urging businesses with more than 50 employees to publish a breakdown of their workforce by ethnicity and pay band, and the announcement of a new Business Diversity and Inclusion Group to ensure government and industry work more closely to improve representation, inclusiveness and opportunities in the workplace.
