What's Up TV - Broadcast Training Model

 

 

Motivate
The MAMA Youth Project (MYP) aims to equip young people from 18-25 years of age with the skills and experience to secure long-term, fulfilling employment in the TV and media industry. It particularly focuses on young people from under-represented groups and those with limited educational or employment opportunities, including unemployed graduates. Its training programmes exist in order to address the lack of diversity in the industry, and it supports under-represented talent to gain entry into positions at all levels – from entry level to TV researchers, Assistant Producers, technical crew, editors, and more.  

A key element of MYP’s focus is on ensuring young Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people on their training courses are equipped with relevant skills and experience to meet the recruitment criteria of the major broadcasters and other media outlets.  

Act 
A unique aspect of the MYP training model is that each 13-week course puts the 24 participants into a ‘real-time’ work situation during which they have to work in a tightly knit team to produce a broadcast-quality magazine TV show called ‘What’s Up’, which is currently broadcast on Sky 1.

In addition to this, in order to provide delegates with further practical and informative experiences, MYP has established partnerships with corporate partners, including Sky, BBC, Procam, and Endemol Shine Productions. It works closely with these partners to develop employment and work placement opportunities for its trainees - each placement has to ensure a focus on individual personal development and provide access to the learning and application of practical skills.

MYP’s support of its trainees continues after the placement is completed, with a commitment to:
•    Finding every participant paid employment, a relevant work placement or further training opportunities after the 13-week course is complete
•    Support with CV preparation, job searches and interview practice
•    Maintaining contact with the participants for a minimum of six months after their training to provide ongoing help and support as and when needed 

Impact 
Between 2012 to 2015, MYP has delivered eight training courses and successfully trained 170 young people from under-represented backgrounds. 82% are now still in employment in the media sector and 90% have secured employment.

MYP has a high success rate, securing work placements for 98% of the graduates and 90% of trainees are still in employment a year after completing the courses.
