As a recent graduate from Queen Mary University and an ambassador for Urban Synergy Mentor Resource Pool, I want to redress the historical disadvantage that has faced  BAME people in the labour market. I applied for the position on the YAP because the programme was in its infancy. The advert really allowed applicants to showcase their passion and encouraged applicants to think big but also to be pragmatic with regards their own ideas and what they could contribute.  For me, this meant the Board members were really welcoming to applicants challenging their views and this front line impact to speak with corporates and influence policy drew me to applying.

We all recognize that things do not happen immediately and patience is key but I am positive that we will make great strides to inspire and help a generation excel and grow into a plethora of professionals, entrepreneurs and future leaders who will do the same for the next generation.

Thoughts on Work Experience at Northern Trust.

I am extremely grateful for the Race for Opportunity team along with members at Northern Trust for kindly and efficiently coordinating my work experience placement at Northern Trust. My schedule was fast-paced and gave me a really comprehensive understanding of many different functions within the business presenting a tremendous scope for learning. During my time with Northern Trust, I attended meetings with Portfolio Managers where we discussed market developments to assess how it would affect client portfolios and assisted with the preparation of important documents. I also spent with time engaging with various divisions including; Family Planning and Wealth Management,  Transitions, Valuation Reporting, Project Management Office, Unit Trusts, Sales, Traders, Product Specialists, Risk & Compliance, Operational Risk to name only a few.
Without doubt, the people made my experience most pleasurable. Each employee I had the pleasure of meeting was extremely welcoming and I was particularly grateful for the considerable time they each awarded me.  One of many highlights was having the pleasure of speaking with the CEO at Northern Trust.  Employees were excited to learn about Race for Opportunity and the Youth Advisory Panel and our plans for 2014.
Through the door that Race for Opportunity has opened, I have built a rich business network, developed my commercial acumen and got the opportunity to leverage key competencies equipping me for any future role. I was extremely fortunate to have such an opportunity and have exposure to work inside a global company like Northern Trust.
I would like to thank all those involved in my work experience from Business in the Community, Race for Opportunity and Northern Trust.
