Abu Nakudu

Member of the Race for Opportunity Youth Advisory Panel. A group of young people aged between 16 & 24 years old chosen to work with Race for Opportunity to find solutions to the challenges of unemployment and progression.

Whilst being raised in North London, I attended Alexandra Park School for 7 years and with the support and motivation from my parents I progressed into further education. Now a responsible adult, I spend my time working towards a Law degree in Southampton.

London has the highest rate of unemployment amongst youths and ethnic minorities in the UK. As a Black African, youth and ethnic unemployment is something that I have experienced whilst growing up. After hearing that Unemployment amongst young black men has doubled in three years, rising from 28.8% in 2008 to 55.9% I became attentive to the concept of a youth advisory panel which offers opportunities for me and the other panel members to express their outlooks and beliefs on the topic.  I am thankful to be granted this position and I am fully committed to help shape a better future.  As Mahatma Gandhi says ‘The future depends on what you do today.’

Work Experience

My work experience at Nationwide took place in the Legal and Compliance department at their head office in Swindon. The work placement gave me a great opportunity to learn about the attitudes of the organisation and helped to develop some of the generic skills required to pursue a career in this sector. At first, it was nerve-racking but my supervisor was there every step of the way and made everything as comfortable as possible.

It was vital for me to gain work experience alongside my academic achievements. Employers nowadays look for the CVs that stand out through wider experiences and show a range of personal skills. The knowledge I gained from this work experience has influenced my optional modules for the final year of my law studies. I was able to develop my communication skills through group interactions with other legal members. In addition, the welcoming and enthusiastic attitude of the legal team at Nationwide made me look forward to coming to work every day. The downside of this experience was the distance which meant I had to commute from London to Swindon daily.  Asides from that, it was a memorable week and a wonderful experience.
